SCIENCE E2K PROGRAMME

The Science E2K Programme at Townsville Primary provides unique opportunities for students with inclination in Science to further develop scientific skills through our unique thinking framework. Utilising the ‘Understand-Plan-Do-Check’ framework, Townsvillites conduct research of the given scientific context, plan their detailed investigations and carry out experiments to obtain findings, and verify hypotheses.

Throughout the Science inquiry journey, mind-mapping tools are weaved into the E2K curriculum to promote thinking. Our students are provided with opportunities to communicate their findings and demonstrate learning through exhibitions. This showcase of talent helps boost their confidence and develop their communication skills, enthusing students to learn deeper about science and to consider careers in science and technology later.

SCIENCE GARDEN

The Science Eco-Garden is an open garden home to many different species of butterflies. Within the garden, we have a greenhouse, a pond and a diversity of plant species. As the eco-garden is conveniently located beside the canteen, students can visit and explore the area during recess.

Students will also visit the garden to do scientific sketching, that is, to draw things that we observe around us. This is a meaningful learning experience as students learn to appreciate nature’s beauty.

In addition, the Primary 5 students also have the opportunity to try out urban farming. This involves growing edible plants from scratch inside the planters. Students will plant the seeds and eventually harvest the ripe fruits and vegetables. Through urban farming, students can have a close-up view of the life cycle of a flowering plant, which makes textbook learning come alive.

SCIENCE WEEK

The Science week event serves to extend science learning beyond routine syllabus, classrooms and laboratories. It provides opportunities for students to be exposed to science concepts in real world authentic situations, e.g. toys, health and medicine, further realising this vision of Science for Life and Society.  The intent is to continually expose students to a wide range of phenomena around them to ignite students’ curiosity and have them ask questions, as they try to make sense of what is happening around them.

The event also promotes student advocacy where students share with their peers science concepts they have learnt or science applications from project artefacts they have designed and constructed.  This provides opportunities for students to acquire confidence in expressing their thoughts and understanding.
